Now Hear This: The Dollaissance, Etc.
A smattering of good things for your earholes
Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there’s a Whole Lot Of Dolly going on.
Not that Our Lady of the High Lonesome, aka the Queen of Country, aka the Smoky Mountain Songbird, aka Aunt Granny, has ever not been around. But at the moment, the decidedly singular singer-songwriter Dolly Parton, who’s been an American icon longer than I’ve been alive, is just as decidedly Having A Moment.
A Netflix anthology series is telling the stories behind her biggest songs. Trixie Mattel, the RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars champ, covers Dolly’s “Backwoods Barbie” on Moving Parts, a six-track acoustic album linked to a recent festival-circuit documentary of the same title. There’s a (probably doomed) movement to swap a statue of Dolly in at the spot at the Tennessee capitol building where Ku Klux Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forrest currently stands. And the Hallmark Channel (which is in the shit this week for spiking wedding ads featuring same-sex couples) premiered Christmas at Dollywood this past weekend.
